What is it like to work at a shelter?
This will vary depending on the position. However, shelters typically provide 24/7 service, meaning shelter workers may have to perform shift/overnight work for 8-12 hour stretches and it is a high-paced residential setting. Staff are expected to pitch in and cover other positions at times as needed. Shelter counsellors are expected to work from a trauma-informed lens, taking a strengths-based and person-centred approach. Counsellors are expected to work from a place of empathy and non-judgement, and are expected to learn/practice active listening, conflict management and de-escalation, as well as have some understanding of intergenerational trauma as well as intersectionality and the relationship between substance use, mental health, and trauma. It is also expected that counsellors respect culturally relevant practices. Some days the work is very rewarding, other days it can be traumatic or thankless, but it is always changing, challenging and interesting.

I have a concern about my work environment, or require accommodations, who do I speak to?
If you are contacted by an employer, please discuss this with them.

Will available jobs be for persons who have completed university only or have some certification?
This job pool database is open to everyone: those with university degrees, related field certifications, students (including international students) looking for full or part-time positions, individuals with work experience specific to this field as well as those with no experience in the GBV/FV sector but have an interest and passion in this sector.

I am eligible and registered, why have I not received a call/email from an employer?
Employers will have access to the database and will reach out to you personally only if your profile, abilities and skillset meets their current job vacancy. We recommend completing the application and providing all relevant information requested to increase your chances.

Where will I work?
All locations are available in Manitoba only. You should only select communities you will be available to work in as some employers do not pay for relocation eg. Shelters. Employers will only contact you about positions that are available in the communities you list on your application registration.

I am a student, if I get a job offer can I work during the school year?
Yes. However, if your school commitments will interfere with your work schedule, be sure to discuss it with the employer before beginning work (preferably during the interview process).

How long will my application sit in the job pool?
It will be kept for 2 years at which point MAWS will send you an email to confirm if you want your profile removed or kept for another 2 years. However, if you will like your profile deleted at any point in time, please contact us at https://maws.mb.ca/contact/
