Working with a Board as an Executive Director

Hello friends!

Working as an Executive Director (ED) in a family violence and emergency shelter can indeed be overwhelming, especially when it comes to navigating your role and working with your Board. Here at MAWS, we’d like to share some helpful ideas to make this journey less stressful and more rewarding.

As an ED of a family violence and emergency shelter, your role is pivotal in creating a safe haven for victims/survivors and driving positive change in your community. Your work pivots on balancing the needs of victims/survivors, staff and your Board. Working effectively with your Board of directors is not just a responsibility – it’s an opportunity to amplify your impact and create lasting change. Here’s how to forge a strategic partnership with your Board:

  • Lead with Vision and Passion

Your dedication to the cause is your greatest asset. Let your genuine passion for supporting victims/survivors of domestic violence shine through in every interaction with your Board. Share compelling stories of impact, including the challenges and triumphs, to ensure that the mission is at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Your enthusiasm will inspire and energize your Board members, reminding them why their governance work is so crucial.

  • Embrace Collaboration and Diversity

Your Board brings together a wealth of diverse perspectives and expertise. Make sure to actively seek out and value their input, particularly when creating strategic plans or addressing complex challenges. By promoting a culture of collaboration, you’ll access a wealth of knowledge and develop innovative solutions that genuinely address your community’s needs.

  • Communicate with Clarity and Purpose

Clear, consistent communication is the bedrock of a strong ED-Board relationship. Be proactive in sharing updates, celebrating successes, and addressing challenges head-on. Use your communication skills to portray a vivid picture of the shelter’s impact and future potential. When Board members feel informed and connected, they become powerful advocates for your cause.

  • Empower Through Education

Invest in your Board’s growth and effectiveness. Provide comprehensive orientations for new members and ongoing training opportunities (eg. MAWS Board Governance training). By deepening their understanding of family as well as domestic violence issues and non-profit governance, you’re equipping them to make more informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to the shelter’s mission.

  • Lead with Integrity and Transparency

Trust is the foundation of any strong partnership. Show consistent integrity in your financial management and decision-making processes. Be transparent and open about challenges and seek your Board’s input on critical issues. Your honesty and openness will foster a culture of trust and mutual respect.

  • Advocate Together for Change

Work together with your Board to create a strong impact for change in your community. Use their connections and influence to advocate for policies that help victims/survivors and prevent family and domestic violence. By working together, you can make your voice heard and bring about significant legislative and social change.

Remember, as an Executive Director, you’re not just managing a shelter – you’re also leading the partnership with your Board. By fostering a strong, collaborative relationship with your Board, you’re creating a united front in the fight against family and domestic violence. Your leadership has the power to transform lives, shape communities, and create a world where every person can live free from fear and abuse.

TAKE AWAY: Let your passion fuel your purpose, your challenges strengthen your resolve, and your partnership with the Board amplify your impact. Together, you have the power to create a brighter, safer future for victims/survivors and their families.

Until next time…

Signed,

Sincerely MAWS.
